West Bridgford Royal British Legion Bowling Club

The Club was founded prior to 1943, while still at Queens Hall, Edward Road. Matches were played at West Bridgford Park and Wilford Lane and in 1946 affiliated itself to the appropriate Bowling Associations. It moved to its present location in 1946 when the British Legion moved to these premises, it shared the bowls green with the Lady Bay Bowls Club for several years. Reported as a ‘most harmonious relationship’ A women’s section was formed in 1959 that was very well attended. These lady players were renowned for their perfect dress code. Many of the original clubs founder members were bowls players and this is well recorded in many photographs.

The membership was stable for many years but began to decline in the late nineties due to a ageing membership. It was decided that the bowls club maintain its own green and pass the cost on amongst its membership. It was considered a fairer arrangement to the main British Legion club who had financial problems.

Happily at the close season 2001 / 2 there was a large influx of members when the Legion bowls club and Masonic Bowls Club merged, after they lost their green. There has also been some interest from a small Sunday men’s team from Clifton, who hope to play next season.

The membership has increased over the last two years, due to the fact we think, that we now have one of the best greens in the Nottingham area, thanks to our excellent grounds man.

The membership now stands at 64, being 28 Ladies and 36 Men. We play in five different leagues under both EBA and Federation rules as well as playing both mixed and ladies friendly matches. We also have nine internal competitions and a club night on Monday nights

We are very proud to have elected our first lady president Mrs Jean Hart.

With the proposed rebuild we shall enjoy improved facilities, which we are sure, will attract not only new members, but also some of the many touring teams that visit this area. We are always looking for new members who will be made most welcome.

Please remember there is no age requirement for bowls.
