The Phoenix Rotors Helicopter Club

For the past seven or eight years, we have been using the top room of the Rutland Sports & Social Club, as our meeting place for our members of Phoenix Rotors model helicopter club.

The club is part of the national body for model flying. The B.M.F.A and so is covered by there insurance scheme. As a club, we fly mainly outside at our local club field when the weather is good.

The helicopters that we fly on a Wednesday night are powered by small electric motors and batteries, which will fly for about 10 minutes. The average costs of the helicopters we fly on Wednesday nights are about £400. Most of the members have much larger helicopters that can have rotor spans of more than 4 feet, and are powered by small petrol engines. They can even be flown upside down.

The club is keen to bring in new members. We also help teach new pilots as flying a model helicopter is quite difficult and so takes many months of practice to be competent. Next year we are planning to do some local demonstrations at summer fetes and schools, if you want to have a look and have a chat come upstairs on a Wednesday night
