Lady Bay Tennis Club History

Lady Bay Tennis Club existed in the early 1900’s on the Oakfield’s Close site. It had 3 grass courts and by 1913 membership was limited to fifty. Jessie Gray, the new secretary, built a new pavilion. With the demand for tennis after WW1 in 1922 Gertrude Road LTC was formed with five hard courts. Edward Somerfield owned the site and provided the Bowling Green. The site was shared with Melton TC from 1925 – 1930 and with Old West Bridgfordians from 1931 to 1943. The original Lady Bay LTC closed in the mid 60’s. The Gertrude LTC changed its name in 1926 to Rutland LTC and again in 1936 to Pierrepont LTC. When the Lady Bay Social Club became the British Legion in 1946 four grass and four hard courts were in use. The British Legion Tennis Club changed its name to Lady Bay Lawn Tennis Club in 2001.

A junior section was formed in 1937 by Nell Husk. By the 1950’s the club dominated the county scene, Jean Bee (nee Petchell) was runner up in the girls singles at junior Wimbledon, also playing for England seeded number 10. In 1958 Carol Webb won the junior Wimbledon girls singles and girls doubles titles, the only Notts player to have achieved this accolade. Also in the 50’s the Clubs players held the County singles and doubles titles, the Club itself held both the LTA ladies and Gents division 1 doubles championships in 1954 – 56. Such was the status of the club, Fred Perry came to play an exhibition match and was pictured posing with our Wimbledon hopefuls.

The ladies remained strong during the 70s and 80s but a loss of men to retirement resulted in a drop down in the leagues. Membership had fallen to an unsustainable level by 1998. New chairman Margaret Cobb resurrected some old values, like 60 years before, by redeveloping the junior membership. The national LTA provided funding for junior tennis and employed Steve Amos a County Development Officer to run a coaching program for the under 8’s, as one of the only seven facilities like it in the country, it attracted interest from the BBC and national press. Membership now stands at over 200 equally split between adults and juniors.

2006 brings the first championship title back to the Club and recently voted runner up in the Notts LTA team of the year award.
