Nottingham Branch of The Burma Star Association

The Burma star association arose out of the desire to provide comradeship and welfare for those who served in the Burma theatre of WWII.

Currently there are about 7000 members nationally; the Nottingham branch was in existence for 55 years until its members (voting 31-1) decided to close the branch.

They used to meet at the Royal Naval club in Arkwright Street from 1971, but when the city council decided to redevelop the area, it hastened the decision to ballot the 35 remaining members about closure.

The branch closed on Thursday 17 August 2006 and their standard was laid up in St Mary’s church High Pavement last November. They have a small plague there as well and every 15th August – to mark the ending of the war in the Far East they lay a poppy wreath. They have there own epitaph, the KOHIMA epitaph.

When you go home, tell them of us, and say For your tomorrows, we gave our today.

Since then those members who can and still wish to meet with comrades have done so through the Legion Hall at West Bridgford. Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at midday with friends from the Air Gunners Association
