The West Bridgford Branch

The Royal British Legion West Bridgford Branch

The British Legion was founded nationally in 1921 (later to be called “The Royal”) as a voice for the ex-Service community. A branch was formed in West Bridgford in 1935, and met at various locations until moving to Gertrude road in 1946. The legion nationally stands at about 450,000 and is the biggest charity in Britain. The work of the branch falls broadly into four sections.

The service committee, looking after the welfare needs of those members and any others who have served a minimum of a week in the armed forces (including national service) and their dependents. Charlie has been doing this work for about ten years now on behalf of this branch.

Ceremonials Our Standard Bearer, Taff Sinclair, carries the Branch Standard wherever it is needed – on Remembrance Sunday, other memorial and civic parades and, only at the request of loved ones, to funeral services of fallen comrades. He also arranges, with John Porter as Parade Marshall, the ceremony at the cenotaph and church services each Remembrance Sunday.

Poppy Appeal This national institution almost defines the British nation. Those very few of us who actually volunteer year after year to sell the familiar emblem during poppy week, can tell you that all classes, ages and races of people in this country will seek you out to buy a poppy.

Judith Booth. actually joined this Branch from outside, as a volunteer, to be our poppy Appeal organiser. She performs a minor miracle each year with a tiny band of helpers to get all the work done. This year, we have collected a record £10,325 so far and we are still counting!

Administration The Branch exists to co ordinate all the above and to ensure that we remain accountable to the Royal British Legion. We collect your subscriptions and the poppy appeal money and make sure it reaches REBEL at London. Almost all of that work is done by Anne Coleman who is not only Branch Treasurer, but is highly active on the Club management side, Women’s section, bingo and much else besides.

There are branches of the Royal British Legion all over Britain and in many places worldwide, wherever even a few British ex-service people have settled.

The legion motto is, “service, not self”

Charlie Harris (Branch Secretary)

The newly independent Rutland Sports & Social Club will continue to support Royal British Legion branch members in their activities.
